There are officially 39 federally-recognized Tribes in Oklahoma. Unofficially, there are descendants of at least 150 Tribes within these 39. Remnant, surviving nations in some cases merged with other Tribes, and in some cases they were unwillingly enumerated among other Nations. This map provides a visual of the impacts of what Tribal Nations call by many names: most famously "The Trail of Tears."
Today, around 500,000 Native Americans live within their Tribal jurisdictions, reservations and surrounding areas of Oklahoma.
